Patients with multiple personalities are predominately female & at least one personality tends to be homicidal or suicidal. Diagnosis of this disorder is difficult. The differential diagnosis includes temporal lobe epilepsy, schizophrenia, & other dissociative disorders. Guidelines are presented for distinguishing multiple personality from those included in the differential diagnosis. Psychometric research is needed to sharpen detection of this disorder.(NBB)
