An epidemiological examination of death certificates & records of community mental health centres & general hospitals to determine the incidence of stress related diseases for a wide range of occupations indicated police have a significantly high rate of premature death (a ranking of 24 among 130 occupations). The major cause of police officer death (69%) was from circulatory disorders; they ranked 3rd in total deaths from suicide (10% of all police deaths).(NBB)
