Increasing rates of suicide in Japan since World War II are discussed in relation to social and cultural changes. Men at greatest risk are those of the “one-digit” Showa generation (born in the first decade of the Showa period, 1926-1935) whose values are now ridiculed in contemporary Japanese society. (NBB)
