This study investigates attitudes, behaviors and personality characteristics of a group of hyperobese, hypothesized to represent one kind of indirect self-destructive behavior, and compares them with two control groups, a suicide attempt group representing direct self-destructive behavior, and a group of patients undergoing appendectomies and hernia repairs representing normal controls with no history of either prior overt suicidal behavior or hyperobesity.
