77 adolescent psychiatric inpatients, whose index of hospitalization was at a mean age of 16, were followed up for 8-10 yrs after discharge. The important findings were: 12 Ss had bipolar affective disorder & were severely disabled (3 committed suicide); 16 Ss had unipolar depression: (1 of these committed suicide); and 18 Ss were psychiatrically well & functioned adequately throughout the follow-up period.
