The suicide rate among American Indians & Alaska natives on reservations is more than twice the rate for the general U.S. population & occurs mainly among the young. Causes suggested are social disorganization, cultural conflict & breakdown of the family structure. Remedies have chiefly to do with allowing more self-determination to Indians, including active participation in mental health services.
