Feelings of Powerlessness and the Role of Violent Actions in Adolescents (IN: Adolescent Psychiatry: Developmental and Clinical Studies Volume IX)

This chapter presents 3 cases in which parental non-acceptance of their children’s anger resulted in depression, hostile attachment, & violent, unpredictable behaviours. In the first case, this led to a suicide attempt followed by a nonfatal shooting; in the second case, to a history of drug abuse, 2 suicide attempts & a conviction on a charge of involuntary manslaughter; in the third case, to a slip from a window ledge while retrieving a book.
