Depression and suicide in children and adolescents has markedly increased. This offers tragic commentary on our times and represents an immediate challenge to all clinicians for improved early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment. The author reviews various historical theories and then discusses statistical data, diagnostic criteria, and treatment suggestions.
