12 hospitalized military men with a primary diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, & without affective illness, were examined for histories of aggression & suicide, & for CSF levels of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), a serotonin metabolite. Histories of aggressive behaviours & of suicide attempts were significantly associated with each other, & with lower 5-HIAA levels. Also, scores on the psychopathic deviate scale of the MMPI correlated with lower 5-HIAA levels. (81 refs.) (RM)
