A nurse describes the lack of psychosocial care on an intensive care unit (ICU). Problems noted include negative views of “gomers” (repeating patients), irrational fears of patients, lack of understanding of “psych cases”, fragmented care, & hiding behind technical expertise. 1 example given is the cruel treatment given to suicide attempters, in the mistaken belief this will discourage future attempts. The author suggests nurses on an ICU treat patients as individuals with psychosocial concerns.
