Recent literature concerning parasuicide by self-poisoning has been reviewed & enquiry has been made into current care for patients who perform parasuicidal acts in Dublin. A specialized & adequately staffed unit for the south side of the city is recommended in which effective medical, psychiatric & social care would be given. This unit would present a valuable focus for research into the motivation & management of parasuicide & would work in close cooperation with existing psychiatric services.
