Organized psychiatric centres for the treatment of mental illness are relatively new in Iran. This article relates existing attitudes toward deviant behavior, including suicide attempts, in Iran. Suicide is not punishable by law. A person attempting suicide is usually admitted to the emergency ward for treatment & when out of danger, released in a few hours. He is usually not seen by a psychiatrist & rarely sent to a mental hospital. (NBB)
