Cognitive therapy, as developed by A.T. Beck & associates at the U. of Pennsylvania, has shown considerable promise as an effective treatment for depression & as a systematic approach to the sense of hopelessness that is associated with suicidal ideation & behavior among depressed individuals. This chapter describes how the cognitive model & cognitive treatment techniques can be applied to depressed & suicidal adolescents.
