Durkheim’s model of suicide serves as background for discussing the causes, treatment & prevention of adolescent suicide. Probable causes include factors such as lack of parental love, exposure to suicide, & feelings of rejection or inadequacy. Symptoms should be treated, first, by helping the adolescent understand them, & then by addressing the underlying causes. The main thrust of prevention should be to educate the public about adolescent suicide & warning signs. 8 myths are discussed. (RM)
