The author provides historical figures for travel accidents, drowning, suicides, homicides & domestic or industrial accidents in Britain. The total incidence of everyday violence today in Britain is around 500 deaths per million persons living per annum. The corresponding figure for the 1860’s also from natinal statistics, was around 800. Almost certainly, total mortality from all violence is lower today than ever before but the kind of violent death has changed.
