This paper considers Romeo & Juliet as representing a breakdown of the entire social order which hinders the development & separation of the adolescents from Oedipal attachments. As a result, Romeo & Juliet show immature ego development. The suicides are the product of socially thwarted drives to separate from incestuous objects & the perception of a hostile world which provides no possibilities.
