The authors review LaRue’s 1859 doctoral thesis in which he argued that suicide in Lower Canada was caused primarily by indifference to matters of faith & religion. The thesis is in 3 sections, the 1st discusses the 3 types of suicide defined by LaRue; the 2nd attempts to establish a method of diagnosis for the most common types of suicide, & the 3rd covers suicide statistics for Lower Canada from 1846-1857. The thesis ends with a short appendix on Aboriginal suicide. (3 refs.) (MM)
