A study of 75 patients who indulged in self-destructive behavior has been conducted at the Department of Psychiatry, King George’s Medical College, Lucknow. It was revealed that the majority of cases belonged to a unitary family set up, a larger number were unmarried males and almost 15% had a previous history of suicidal episodes. Financial stress, rejection in love and strained family relations acted as precipitating events.
