Of 50 emergency admissions of patients for protection against suicide, the admission decision was, in 74% of the cases, solely on the patient’s allegation. Over 1/2 of the allegedly suicidal patients were schizophrenic & 20% were substance abusers. Only those allegers with affective disorders manifested suicidal behavior of possible concern after admission. In order not to distract from the patient’s real needs, assessment should be based on risk factors, diagnosis, & clinical judgment. (GW)
