Medical examination records, hospital emergency room and admission records were reviewed for completed & attempted suicides for Puerto Ricans (PR), Blacks and Whites in an area of Manhattan between 1968-70. PR males showed the highest rate of completion and PR’s overall had a higher rate of attempts. Whites were only slightly higher than Blacks in completions and attempts. The difference in rates between Blacks and Whites may result from differences in the reporting of suicide between groups.
