Suicidal inmates are typified as newly arrived, disgraced inmates without lengthy records; despondent with long sentences; & manipulative, anti-social prisoners. It is argued that staff may unconsciously wish certain inmates dead & suicidal inmates manifest intent by withdrawal, depression, or suicidal ideation. Prevention implies serious attention to life-threatening gestures, placement in group settings, provision of appropriate medication, & establishing contact with outside persons.
