Briefly comments on aspects of assessment & treatment for suicide in children & adolescents. While youngsters seldom volunteer that they are suicidal, they are usually honest when asked. Initial assessment should determine risk, feelings at present, the family situation, & circumstances surrounding an attempt. Gestures should be regarded as a cry for help, & therapy should address family dynamics. Recent advances include the dexamethasone suppression test for depression & use of tricyclics. (RM)
