Painful affects (ie. mental distress) & soothing mechanisms (anything decreasing painful affects) are discussed. It is suggested that a study of painful affects & soothing mechanisms might allow the typing of preschool children, especially as to those who might manifest self-destructive behavior (& eventually suicide). A brief case history & a closing discussion of the nosology & epidemiology of early childhood psychiatric disorders is included. (RM)
