Caring for the dying suicidal patient produces significant emotional strain. Nursing personnel who provide care for significant numbers of these individuals & who have the most intimate regular contact risk being emotionally affected. Factors influencing nurses & other staff caring for these patients were examined to promote a greater recognition & understanding of the clinical situation & to assist nurses & other staff in dealing with them in a therapeutic manner.
