Reviews the literature to demonstrate the effectiveness of bereavement services in decreasing the risk of psychiatric & psychosomatic difficulties associated with the death of a loved one. 3 types of services are reviewed: professional, voluntary & self-help. Evidence suggests these services are helpful, especially for those who perceive their families to be unsupportive. Important factors include the opportunity to express grief & reassurance of the normality of aspects of grief. (8 refs.) (RM)
