This study reports changes of suicide rate in Australia, England & Wales in the twenty years up to 1976. Findings indicate that the Australian rate has decreased since 1963 but remains higher than in England & Wales. This decrease has been among older people. There is a remarkable similarity between suicide patterns in all three countries. The major discrepancy between rates is the use of firearms in Australia, which are more readily available than in England or Wales.
