33 cases of attempted suicide were admitted into the emergency ward in Gulbarga between April 1976-March 1977. Most attempters were between the ages of 15 & 30. Organophosphorous compounds were the most common agent used in self-poisoning. Mental illness & disturbed interpersonal relationships were the causes of the suicide attempt in the majority of cases.
