279 psychiatric patients were compared with controls for the possible effects of loss of a parent before the age of 15. In-patient depressives showed an excess of maternal bereavement (p<.05 significance). Out-patient depressives, schizophrenics, and patients with an anxiety state did not differ from controls. (WL)
