Abstract
Half of Suicides Had Given Advance Warning
At a meeting of the American Psychiatric Association, data was presented showing that half of 140 completed suicides in New Hampshire over a 2 year period, had given warning of their suicidal intent through threats or previous attempts. This runs contrary to the myth that those who talk about suicide will not complete. The presenter of this data also argued that it should be legally possible to place suicidal patients under psychiatric observation entirely on the responsibility of the physician.
