The concept of affiliation was tested re: suicide. It was predicted that first-born & only children should be over-represented in a sample of attempted suicides. Available data from 3 pertinent studies, however, show that it is the oldest & perhaps also the youngest children who are over-represented in a group of adolescent suicidal attempts. Among adult actual suicides, available data show no relationship to birth order.
