A trial with spironolactone as a treatment for the premenstrual tension syndrome resulted in improvement in 6 of 7 patients studied. The onset of action, when taken orally, is within one to two days. The drug blocks the action of the aldosterone system which is believed to cause the disorder, found in at least one-tenth of all women.
