Chapter
Suicide and Self-Destructive Behavior on the Cheyenne River Reservation (IN: Suicide Among the American Indians: Two Workshops ed. by L H Dizmang and D D Swenson)
Curlee W V
Describes the social & economic environment that can lead to a loss of hope for those Indians living on the reservation. Difficulties contributing to suicidal behavior include a lack of identity, an absence of stability and discipline, the feeling that being Indian was of little value, & suppression of emotions. Suggestions for improvement include upgrading the environment, doing further research, & involving the Indians in solving their problems. (RM)
