This article discusses John Donne’s “Biathanatos” written in 1608, which has been called the first defence of suicide in the western world. Several arguements have appeared in casual treatments by other writers & they have been set forth in a book written by French sceptic Pierre Charron. This paper shows the parallels between Donne’s “Biathanatos” & Charron’s “De La Sagesse”.
