In this article, Durkheims Suicide and Goffmans Role Distance are examined to document a theoretical continuity of the two works. It is argued that Goffman extends Durkheims original framework to explain suicide rates. Goffman develops and applies Durkheims theory to new data, and in doing so, develops a theoretical paradigm.
