Research and clinical efforts to appraise an individual’s vulnerability for suicidal crises seem to be among our least developed skills. Several reasons for our ineffectiveness are mentioned. A model is offered for assessing the vulnerability to suicidal crises within the context of an individual’s pattern of ego strengths & self-other expectations. Implicit in the model is the suggestion that we move away from questions such as whether a person is suicidal or not to more dynamic concerns.
