This article examines the “neglected topic” of the internist & family physician in the recognition & management of the suicidal patient & the family. A central role for the family doctor in early detection is advocated & the effects of the suicidal patient on the family are described. Common characteristics of families with a suicidal member are listed. The authors recommend increased study of suicide theory & prevention in medical schools. (JHC)
