44 patients who attended the lithium clinic for treatment of an affective disorder were investigated for psychosocial morbidity. Bipolar cases have lower age onset, more hospitalizations, a family history of mania, a higher attempted suicide rate, higher social class, & a higher divorce rate. Alcoholism, high job & residential mobility & high self image among bipolars were also found to be related. An improvement in psychosocial stabilty can be attributed to lithium treatment. (MRE)
