The authors wished to determine whether depression was present in an early adolescent nonpatient school population. This study, using a standard instrument to measure depression, indicated that 35% of 7th and 8th graders had significant levels of depression. The authors suggest that accountability for student mental health be incorporated into the school system through earlier intervention and preventive guidance programs.(TC)
