Briefly discusses the varieties of self-mutilating behaviour & reviews studies that allow estimates of their prevalence, with special focus on head banging, trichotillomania, wrist cutting, & self-castration. The relationship between the study of self-mutilation and the study of suicidal behaviour is discussed, & it is suggested that research would benefit from a closer interaction between them. Several areas of research are proposed.
