This paper considers erotized repetitive hangings as self-destructive behaviors, attempting to a) draw the attention of clinicians and parents to this potentially lethal form of sexual behavior, and b) stimulate clinical study of patients who engage in such behaviors in order to better understand and treat them. The author also attempts to conceptualize this syndrome psychodynamically and to relate it to neurophysiologic mechanisms. The suicidal intent behind such behaviors is considered. (35 refs)
