Reviews psychiatric considerations of the nature, assessment, & treatment of suicide. Biochemical theories of etiology are also considered. 2 cases illustrate the extremes of suicidal behaviour. Risk factors that should be assessed are included in a table. Alcoholism & hopelessness are considered to be central to many suicides.
