Self-poisoning (parasuicide) is an endpoint behaviour which gives little indication of the basic disturbance. There is always some self-destructive intent & a desire to call for help, but the mix varies. After treatment for poisoning, the doctor must evaluate the meaning of the act, establish a good relationship with the patient, determine management plans & consider long-range treatment. (RM)
