The characteristics of the suicidal patient include: age, sex, marital status, education, physical & mental illness, depression, prior attempts, and preoccupation with suicide. In identifying the high risk patient, a computerized, standardized, statistical formula is suggested over a clinical diagnosis. Management of the patient both by relatives & physicians is also outlined. A long term relationship should be fostered since recurrence is likely. (EP)
