The concepts elaborated in this paper are primarily theoretical, with much of the the authors’ thinking predicated upon established learning theory principles synthesized with their own clinical data. While various procedures in learning & behavior therapy are mentioned, the orientation of the authors is relatively generic in an attempt to place suicidal behaviors in the context of learning theory as a whole rather than within a particular school of thought.
