Suicidal statements in young children are frequent and may or may not be indicators of impending danger. The 1st goal in management is not prevention of death or injury as it would be in the older population but rather the assessment of a suicidal statement as a sign of emotional disturbance. In the 2nd stage of approach appropriate intervention for the emotional disturbance is indicated. Factors leading to suicidal behavior are discussed.(CI)
