Studies of 46 attempted suicides at 2 correctional institutions indicate that the suicide attempt rate for a jail for inmates awaiting trial or sentencing was 3.2%, while at a reformatory for long-term inmates it was 1.4%. Compares attempters at both institutions & controls. Delineates 3 types of attempters: (a) depressives, particularly at the jail; (b) manipulative attempters, especially during early incarceration & (c) anomic attempters, making a gesture after months or yrs of incarceration.
