An extensive historical & modern survery of various legal system’s rules & treatment regarding suicide is provided. Historical attitudes & the influence of Christianity on English common law is discussed. Christian doctrine prohibited the taking of one’s own life, thus licensing punishment of the suicide, e.g. denial of a Christian burial with sanctions against the suicide’s body. Philosopher’s rallies against orthodox attitudes are discussed as well as alternative approaches to traditional law.
