Unemployment and Suicide

Unemployment for men can predispose toward suicide. Studies from 1903, 1923 and 1965 all indicate unemployment as a direct or indirect factor in suicide. The Sainsbury study has clearly shown a higher rate of suicide among unemployed males. Other factors such as mental problems which lead to job loss can be seen as part of the complexity in isolating the direct relationship of unemployment and suicide.
