This paper examines the concept of role reversal in relation to disordered parent-child relationships. By the use of role analysis, the dynamics of role-reversal are revealed and using original case material the author demonstrates how suicidal behavior may be the ultimate response by the adolescent to the stress of being persistently cast in the “parent” role. Treatment methods focussing on the dysfunctional relationship are briefly discussed.
