All suicides at a Veterans Administration Hospital over a 10-yr period were subjected to “psychological autopsy.” Data suggest that both extra- and intrahospital factors may be related to increased suicide rate. Intrahospital factors include increase in hospital size, unwise use of drugs, and emphasis on open hospital and brief hospitalization.
